Butterfly farms

In the last ten years, Costa Ricans have developed many butterfly farms throughout the country. These butterfly greenhouses represent an important economic activity for many residents of rural communities. In addition to serving as living museums, most of the farms export butterfly pupae for exhibit in the U.S. and Europe The screened gardens are wonderful chances to learn about butterfly ecology and observe the winged creatures up close. Guided tours help you understand the stages in a butterfly’s life. One large butterfly farm is located about an hour from San José and makes a good day trip. Others are located in Monteverde, La Paz Waterfall Gardens and other destinations on longer itineraries.
