Tortuguero

Explore Tortuguero, land of incredible biological diversity; where at night, from July to September, impressive Green Sea Turtles nest on the beach. A tropical sanctuary for more than 300 different species of birds and natural habitat for an amazing array of wildlife; such as monkeys, crocodiles and iguanas, among many others. Discover the lush vegetation that abounds in the midst of the Rainforest. Tortuguero, is a navigable network of lake and canals that cross the National Park from Southeast to Northwest and accessible only by land, boat or air.

Founded as a National Park 26 years ago, Tortuguero is an area of great biological diversity, where 11 different habitats have been identified, as well as 309 species of birds including toucans, macaws, egrets, herons and an infinity of other species. Wildlife is impressive: crocodiles, three different species of monkeys (white-faced, howler and spider), sloths, endangered manatees, iguanas, lizards, among many others. The park area extends to 18.947 ha (46.818 acres) on land and 52.265 ha (129.147 acres) of marine habitat.

Located in the Northeast area of the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica, Tortuguero is often compared to as the "Amazon of Costa Rica" for it's rich vegetation, fauna and the navigable network of lagoons and canals that cross the National Park from Southeast to the Northwest. The beach at Tortuguero is the most important site in the occidental half of the Caribbean for the nesting of the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) that occurs between July and September.

Weather:
Is characterized by warm, breezy days. Because of afternoon clouds, November through June are cooler months. From the middle of July to the end of October it is the dry season of the area, however you can experience regular rains through the week.

Pros:
Beautiful rainforest, amazing views and a once in a lifetime experience.

Cons:
Due its location, it is hard to get and it is recommended to stay in San Jose or Arenal the night before.
Hotels offers full pension system due their locations and lack of restaurants and options.   
The area does not offer modern services as air conditioning.  
Swimming is not allowed at the beach of Tortuguero.

Laguna Lodge

Laguna Lodge is a rain forest ecotourism lodge, a leader among this tropical country’s hotels and resorts with an extra touch in style, comfort and personalized service. It lies along Costa Rica’s northern Caribbean Zone, an exclusive location on a narrow strip of land between the sea on one side and the Tortuguero-Lagoon on the other.

Laguna Lodge offers one or two or three day packages that include transportation, meals, naturalist guides, tours to the Tortuguero National Park canals, the village of Tortuguero, the Turtle Museum of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation. Additional activities include fishing trips for Tarpon, Snook, among other species. Kayaking is available so you can explore some of the canals on your own if you have a chance.

This Region is the most important nesting site in the entire Western half of the Caribbean for the green sea turtle. The season starts around mid July and ends by October and you could be able to take one of our night walks to search for green sea turtles.

The Lodge offers 80 standard rooms with views to the gardens and forest that surrounds us. The rooms offer private bathroom, hot water, ceiling fan, reading lamps, wooden bench outside your room to sit and admire the gardens.
Our open air restaurant is located in front of the Tortuguero lagoon, providing beautiful views of the forests nearby, you will also admire the boats of local people passing by to the local village. Meals are served buffet style with a variety of fresh tropical fruits and vegetables. Coffee, tea, and cookies are available 24 hours a day at the restaurant. The decoration of our restaurant and bars include woods that have been collected at our beach area and treated in our workshop.

  • Covered boats to transport our guests from the boarding port and open boats that we use to tour the canals. All boats are equipped with life jackets and rain ponchos for your safety and comfort.
  • Fishing trips with experienced local captains for Tarpon, Snook, Jacko Bell, Red Snapper, Macko among other species (trips upon request).
  • Turtle nesting night walks (from mid July to October approximately).
  • Botanical garden.

It's beautiful gardens and rustic accommodations, blend with the exuberant jungle vegetation, exotic birds and wildlife creating the perfect balance of nature. In the pool area we protect a "Red-eyed tree frog" project, where you will observe these lovely animals in their natural habitat. Relaxing ranchos/palapas with hammocks tucked away in the gardens, are the right place to relax after a day of adventures and discoveries, read a good book or just enjoy the sounds of the rainforest.

Private nature trails featuring a open sky butterfly farm provide the opportunity to discover the different species of trees, palms trees, heliconias and many other plant species that abound in the Tropical Rainforest. Every evening, we also present lectures on Tortuguero area at our conference room, where you will be able to learn more of the fantastic inhabitants of the National Park.

For our guests enjoyment we recently added an entertainment/game room area that features pool table, darts, foosball and different table games for adults & children. Drinks including sodas, beer or juices are also available in this area. The Lodge also features a souvenir shop where you can find items of personal nature.

On your free time, you might want to stroll by the pristine beach in front of the Lodge, sit on the sand to feel the magic of the ocean and admire this almost-endless looking palm lined beach. Although, please be cautious because dangerous currents make the ocean in the area unsafe for swimming.
